Being on a plane for so many hours can get boring, especially if the inflight entertainment isn't to your liking
But in a world integrated and operated by AI, it could help transform individuals' lives in more convenient ways. What if passengers could enjoy more personalized entertainment tailored to their tastes with the help of AI?
Background
In exploring the reasons why people want customized products, two main motivations stand out are identity and function.
Customization for identity addresses the desire for expression and finding personal significance in a product.
On the other hand, customization for function emphasizes improving the product's usefulness and performance.
To confirm and better understand the pain points users experience with in-flight entertainment, I conducted a user survey focused on gathering insights about their entertainment preferences and frustrations during long flights.
This feedback would help identify key areas for improvement, such as content variety, personalization needs, and usability issues, providing a clear direction for designing a more engaging and tailored in-flight entertainment experience.

How Might We provide passengers with entertainment on the plane that best suits their preferences?
Challenge
Focus
To keep passengers entertained on a long flight, the key is offering a highly tailored experience for each individual.
Personalized content that aligns with the user’s preferences can significantly enhance engagement and satisfaction, making the journey feel shorter and more enjoyable.
After gathering initial feedback from the user survey, I wanted to dive deeper into understanding the specific pain points and overall user experience during flights.
This phase involved conducting in-depth user interviews and observing common behaviors. The goal was to uncover detailed insights about the challenges passengers face with current in-flight entertainment systems, such as limited content variety, lack of personalization, and issues with accessibility or usability. By exploring these aspects, I aimed to gain a comprehensive view of their needs, which would inform the design of a more engaging and user-friendly entertainment solution.
Research - User Interview
Based on the insights gained during the research phase, I have developed user scenarios to outline two primary scenarios that users may encounter during their airplane journey.
These scenarios reflect common user behaviors, needs, and frustrations, providing a clear understanding of how different types of passengers interact with in-flight entertainment systems.
Research - Insights
People who can't find entertainment they like end up enjoying the rest of the flight on their own devices or forcing themselves to sleep. But what kind of platform or application do people who enjoy entertainment on their devices use to entertain themselves?
I decided to return to the interview phase and ask participants about their preferences for external platforms and entertainment options.
After identifying patterns from the insights, I created user personas to deeply understand the users’ needs, behaviors, and motivations.
These personas allowed me to step into the shoes of different user types, capturing their attitudes and emotional responses toward in-flight entertainment. By immersing myself in their mindset, I could better address their specific pain points and design tailored solutions that align with their preferences, enhancing the overall user experience.
Based on the personas I developed, I also mapped out Ryan’s user journey to better understand his thoughts, actions, and emotions at each phase of his flight experience.
By visualizing this journey, I could pinpoint key touchpoints, identify moments of frustration or delight, and gather deeper insights into his needs and expectations. This user journey helped highlight specific pain points and opportunities for improving the in-flight entertainment experience, guiding the design process to better align with Ryan’s preferences and behaviors.
Define
I utilized affinity mapping to identify patterns and discovered three main categories.
💜 Issues they faced.
🧡 What they think is good.
💚 What they like to do.
The main issues people faced.
💜 Limited Entertainment Options
🧡 Unclear Instructions (buttons etc.)
💚 Poor-quality Headphones
Things people are satisfied with in existing inflight entertainment system.
💜 Screen Size
🧡 Simple Interface
What people like to do.
💜 Series / Movie : Netflix / Disney+
🧡 Games : Nintendo / Phone
💚 Books / E-book : Physical Book / Webtoon / Kindle
💙 Music : Apple Music / Spotify / YouTube Music
I explored potential opportunities for enhancing the in-flight entertainment system by focusing on both internal improvements (features within the system) and external integrations (connecting with other services).
Internally, I considered features like personalized content recommendations, streamlined navigation, and adaptive interfaces that adjust based on user preferences. Externally, I looked into integrating third-party apps, syncing with passengers’ personal devices, and offering real-time updates on flight status and destination activities. By addressing both aspects, the goal is to create a seamless and engaging experience that caters to diverse passenger needs while reducing common pain points.
Opportunities Exploration
During the exploration I also came across some issues to be consider which are
Security Concerns : How can users secure the connection between their devices and the inflight screen?
Accessibility : How can users easily type and input information into the inflight screen?
Issues to consider
The solution I developed to address these issues is to connect devices to the inflight screen
💜 Users can connect their device to the in-flight screen by entering the security code displayed on their personal device into the screen to secure the connection.
🧡 Users can directly type from their device to input information on the screen.

Final Design
For the visual design, my goal was to create an interface that evokes the feeling of flying and exploration while maintaining a modern, innovative aesthetic.
